Our Must-Have Map App (You Need This!)

By Sami

Listen up travelers! There’s a constant debate between whether Google Maps or Apple Maps reign supreme, but we’re here to tell you that neither are our number one for travel.

So what is the must-have map app to have so you only get lost in adventure, but not the city? Drum roll please:

Our Must-Have Map App (You NEED This!) // Destination Rogue // destinationrogue.com // #travel #tips #hacks #app #tech #destination #map

Maps.Me is a free app for mobile offline maps! What does that mean? Well, when you’re wandering our beautiful globe without wifi, you can still not only whip your phone out and look at a map, but you can also navigate on it (which way am I facing?)…. and aside from the general searching for directions, Maps.Me has so many other cool features.

You can create saved locations on the map with an easy tap and hold option, making it easy to bookmark your hotel to get back to, or those really cute shoes that you need to go back for after dinner. You can also see all of your saved spots on the map all of the time, so you can tell how near or far they are from each other and you. You can also create saved lists of places in different locations, so you can plan ahead or remember what you loved when you travel back to a city.

On Maps.Me you can also find nearby guides. Yep, you heard that right! The app searches for tour-guides available near you and you can contact them through the app, so if you’re feeling lost or find yourself somewhere that you don’t speak the local language – no problem, call on one of these app-vetted guides to help you out! You can also use the app to share your location within the app or with others who don’t have the app.

In case any of you are still wondering why to not just settle with Google or Apple maps, our FAVORITE part of Maps.Me is how incredibly specific it is. The more rogue you get when traveling, the less chance there is that there will be a map to fit your needs – and we’re not even talking about anything as extreme as traversing a jungle, or climbing a mountain. We’re talking more simply heading to places like San Marcos Guatemala where there’s one main road, and everything else is dirt pathways, or Marrakech, Morocco, where the derbs of the medina are tighter than a NYC alleyway. Many of these pathways aren’t shown in these larger apps, which can end up leading you in circles for hours wondering “how do I get on the other side of this building?”. With Maps.Me we found more roads, streets, alleys and pathways than any other offline map we’ve ever used, not only helping us save time, but keeping us feeling safer cause let’s face it, it’s stressful to be in a new place and not be able to find your way!

So there you have it fellow rogues, Maps.Me is our vote for most comprehensive and easiest to use offline map! Now go out there and don’t get lost!
